Leaving Dayton, the railroad begins a climb through Eagle up towards Ebbetts Pass.  Longer trains without enough power may have to double this hill, hence why engineers like getting out of Bakersfield or Bayshore with either plenty of power, or a running start (or both).

Trains cross over the Cochias Valley branch, then duck into the tunnel to lead our northbound passengers and cargo ahead through the mountains, not around them.
